......a Hand Up Not a Hand Out

Step by Step Educare Centre

Step by Step Educare Centre is based in the informal sector of Khayelitsha. It was founded in 2006 to provide pre-school education to children from the neighbouring area. When CMI first got involved in 2010 the facilities were poor and educational equipment was minimal.
Phase 1

Equip the school with basic educational equipment, kitchen goods and toys.

The kitchen was housed in a leaking rusted zinc structure. This we replaced with a shipping container which now houses a kitchen, office and classroom.

The school currently has a capacity of 85 children. There are 150 children registered but average daily attendance is 80 as many parents only send children to school when they themselves are working. There is insufficient capacity to handle the total children registered.

Perhaps the most important change is the light in the young faces. Dreary songs of despair have been replaced by songs of hope - songs of the love of God!

Phase 2 - May 2014

Extention of the school buildings is almost complete thanks to Bill Hebner and the teams from Youth Mission Projects UK .

Containers are in position, trusses up. Now for the roof, floor, windows and the finishing touches.

Provision has been made for proper classroom facillities to accommodate all registered children.

The new facility includes a communal hall, office for staff, proper kitchen and toilets.

As this building is also used by the Docks Mission Church Khayelitsha on Sundays, provision has also be made for an office for the pastor.
